This could be the worst storm since the 1980's. Damaging gusts struck overnight and early on Monday along the south coast of England but the strongest winds are now said to be blowing in east London, Kent and Essex. Winds where forcast to hit well over 80mph. A gust of 99mph was recorded at Needles Old Battery, Isle of Wight, at 06:00 GMT. Many rail services are cancelled or delayed and around 130 flights are cancelled at Heathrow.

A skyscraper that has a combination of curves and a series of windows (which act like mirrors) can have a damaging effect on the objects below it. Amazingly this exists in London, it is a newly built skyscraper nicknamed the Walkie Talkie.

As you may have noticed heavy rain has fallen across parts of the UK as the hottest July in seven years ends on a wet note. Met Office yellow "be aware" warnings for rain are in place for northern England, Scotland, and the West and East Midlands. Overnight heavy rain fell over Market Harborough, Leicestershire, and parts of Newcastle. There are four flood warnings, in Derbyshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire.

After a wonderfully hot July it has ended with heavy rain fall a cross much of the UK. In Nottinghamshire about 1.4 inches of rain fell in the space of 30 minutes on Tuesday evening, causing disruption to roads and public transport services. Many homes have been damaged and flood warnings were in place on the River Leen following the thunderstorms.

If the water inside your pipes freezes it can expand, stretching the pipe to breaking point which causes a burst.
